Punt Suraua: about 10 minutes on foot from Trin Mulin
The tourist office maintains the fire pits around Trin and keeps them stocked with firewood. Almost every one has a drinking-water fountain, plus picnic tables and usually a wooden shelter. There's nowhere you need to register.

- Val Bergla in Trin Porclis, about 20 minutes from Trin: firewood, a drinking fountain, a picnic table, a composting WC — and right next door the multi-sport playground of the Parc da moviment.
- Scrausch in Trin Digg, about 15 minutes and half a kilometre from Trin Porclis, suitable for pushchairs: firewood, a drinking fountain, a picnic table, a wooden shelter. The spot lies right on the fitness and yoga trail.
- Acla in Trin Quadris, about 20 minutes and half a kilometre from the car park, suitable for pushchairs: firewood, a drinking fountain, a picnic table, a shelter and a frog pond — for looking at, not for swimming.
- Ransun in Trin Mulin, about an hour on foot on the forest and meadow plain on the way into the Rhine Gorge towards Versam Station: firewood, a drinking fountain, a composting WC, a picnic table.
- Crestasee, about 30 minutes from Trin Mulin, suitable for pushchairs, car park no. 5: a fire pit and picnic tables stand here. The tourist office's list does not mention firewood or a fountain at this spot, and the WC is only open during the swimming season.
- By the Punt Ruinaulta suspension bridge lies another spot with firewood and a picnic table — about 15 minutes from Trin Station, over on the Bonaduz bank.
- The authorities close the fire pits when there is a risk of forest fire; the one at the Crestasee has already been closed for this reason. The federal forest fire warning shows the current situation.

The nearest playground lies at the Punt Suraua fire pit, a few minutes from the site, where the Flem and the Turnigla meet. Grilling and playing share the same meadow here — that's the whole advantage of this spot.
- The facility includes firewood, a drinking-water fountain, several picnic tables and a WC.
- The large car park no. 3 lies right next to it, handy for picking up visitors or bringing in gear.
- The other three playgrounds in the municipality: in Trin above the schoolhouse, in Trin Digg on Via Scarneras, and in Trin Porclis the Parc da moviment.
- The Parc da moviment is the largest of the four — a multi-sport ground with movement stations, a fire pit, a drinking fountain and a WC.
- All four are freely accessible, with no entry fee and no registration.
- For those travelling with a pushchair: the tourist office describes the paths to the Acla and Scrausch fire pits and the path to the Crestasee as pushchair-friendly.

A movement trail in the Val Bergla with about fifteen stations: slackline, long jump pit, balance and rope course, wobble labyrinth, pump-pedal bike and ground trampoline. The difficulty can be adjusted at each station, and anyone can join in.
- The way from the stop: towards Trin Dorf via the Via Hans Erni, left at the composting toilet and about 100 metres uphill.
- By car to Trin Porclis, park at the works yard, then the same route.
- The paths on the site are suitable for pushchairs.
- On site: a drinking-water fountain, a fire pit with a shelter, a WC and a playground.
- Concentration, strength, speed, agility, coordination and stamina are all trained — the stations are designed for every age and fitness level.
- The facility is open from May to November and costs nothing.
- It was built by the IG Sportkids association; it is maintained by the Trin tourist office.
- The Val Bergla fire pit belongs to the facility: firewood, a drinking fountain, a picnic table and a composting WC.

Fitness and yoga trail

A 1.2-kilometre soft-surface track through the Grosswald, plus fifteen fitness and nine yoga stations. The path runs over roots and stones on the Bot Fiena, right in the debris of the landslide.
- A wooden panel at each yoga station explains the exercise; together the stations offer over seventy ways to work out.
- The trail is designed for every fitness level — you set the difficulty yourself.
- Freely accessible, at any time, with no entry fee and no registration.
- The route runs over forest ground with roots and stones. Sturdy shoes are more comfortable than trainers.
- The Scrausch fire pit lies along the trail, with firewood, a drinking fountain, a picnic table and a wooden shelter — the path there is suitable for pushchairs.
- For those who'd rather practise with guidance: the Bhavani yoga school in Trin gives classes.

The gravel court in front of the old Sagi sawmill is the village's boccia court. You play whenever it suits you — nothing here is reserved.
- The metal balls lie ready on site and cost nothing.
- The Volg Trin Mulin stands right opposite; get drinks there.
- The court belongs to the old sawmill, once driven by the water of the Turnigla stream — like the two mills that gave Trin Mulin its name.
- No entry fee, no registration, no opening hours.

The TC Trin club's facility lies on Prau Davon, right along our access path — you walk past it every time. The club has existed since 1994 and lets guests join in.
- If the courts are free, you may play without a reservation. Those wanting certainty reserve ahead.
- Reservations are made online via GotCourts; you register once for that.
- Pay the court fee before playing by putting it in a sealed envelope in the letterbox at the clubhouse, or transfer it via TWINT.
- The courts are floodlit, so you can play in the evening too.
- Anyone with questions can reach the club at office@tc-trin.ch.
- No need to travel there specially: the path from the site to Trin Mulin station passes right by the facility.

Hiking poles

The tourist office provides hiking poles to take along. You take one, set off, and bring it back after the hike — that's all there is to it.
- The four stations stand in Trin Porclis, at Punt Suraua, in Sursch and at the village square in Trin.
- Punt Suraua is the nearest from the site: about 10 minutes on foot.
- Various sizes hang there — for children and adults.
- The poles are free. You don't need to register or leave a deposit.
- You can bring them back to any of the four stations; the sensible choice is the one you come out at.
- The tourist office lists the hikes from Trin on the same page — the Acla loop, the Bargis loop, the riverside path, the Senda Sursilvana, the Camino de Santiago, the Pinut via ferrata and the Trutg dil Flem.

Casa Cultura Ringel

The cultural venue in the upper village, a carefully renovated old house. The Casa Cultura Ringel Trin association wants to «bring back the good old days in the Ringel» here — with events of all kinds. The singer-songwriter Walter Lietha lives in the house; his dialect songs shaped a generation in the 1970s, and in 2025 he received the Grisons Culture Prize.
- In the same house, Walter Lietha runs his antiquarian bookshop Narrenschiff — for decades a bookshop in Chur's old town, now in Trin: old books, art, rarities. And every so often he takes the stage himself with his guitar.
- Those wanting to get to know him before he comes: the 2025 film «Drum sing i grad drum» tells his story.
- What happens here: performances by established musicians and theatre artists, programmes with young talent, plus dance evenings, readings, card-game evenings, music get-togethers and discos.
- Organisers range from the cultural association itself to village clubs to outside groups.
- The large hall seats up to 130 people. For smaller events there's the historic parlour, the Beiz Ringel, and the Jägerstübli.
- An open catering kitchen can be rented along with the Jägerstübli — families, clubs and groups cook there themselves.
- At the bar you serve yourself and note down what you take.
- Yoga and Pilates classes also run in the house.

The place and its history
Why Trin Mulin has that name
Trin's mill · two mills, four waterwheels · today a power station
right here — you're standing in the middle of it
The two Turnigla springs were put to use early on. At times the water of the Turnigla stream drove four waterwheels at two mills and ran on to the village sawmill and other machinery. Hence the name: Trinsermühle, Trin's mill.
- The millwheel itself no longer exists — it can only be seen in old pictures now.
- In its place stands today's Mulin power station, which turns the same spring water into electricity.
- What remains of the sawmill is the gravel court: that's where the village plays boccia today.
- Trin Mulin is the third of the three hamlets. The others are Trin Dorf, up on the sunny terrace, and Trin Digg, on the east slope of the Bot Fiena.
- The settlement grew out from the village square along the Via Cava towards Parlatsch and Ruegna; the Parlatsch quarter has only taken shape in the last fifty years.
- The plains of Prada, Suraua, Isla, Ruegna and Nigluz lie all around. In winter they are groomed into a cross-country ski trail — it starts right outside the door.
- Trin is a bilingual municipality: German and Romansh are spoken. Trin Mulin, in fact, means nothing other than Trin's mill.
- The hamlet of Pintrun accounts for the fourth star on the municipal coat of arms.

Three castle ruins above the village

Canaschal: about 15 minutes from «Trin, Quadris»
Three ruins stand above Trin, and they belong together: Crap Sogn Parcazi was a fortified church castle on a rock spire, Canaschal its outpost above the road into the Grisons Oberland, Belmont a rock castle in the forest. The name Trin may come from «Trimons» — the three hills.
- Canaschal is the easiest: about 15 minutes on foot from the Trin Quadris car park and stop. From the hill the view sweeps 180 degrees across the Grisons Rhine valley, into the Domleschg, into the Safiental and up into the Surselva.
- The west tower of Canaschal still stands, from the first half of the 13th century: 7.6 by 8.2 metres, walls up to 2.2 metres thick, three storeys visible, with a well-preserved raised entrance on the second floor. A second tower stood 150 metres further east.
- You reach Crap Sogn Parcazi from the Trin Porclis car park or stop via the Via Hans Erni in about 30 minutes. The final climb onto the rock spire is cut into the rock and secured with ropes — nothing for small children or wet days.
- The complex dates from the 8th century, lies at 1050 metres and measures about 50 by 80 metres at the top. It was dedicated to St Pancras and was likely the original parish church for Trin and Tamins; the baptistery is considered one of the oldest in Switzerland.
- In the High Middle Ages the church castle became the seat of the lordship of Hohentrins. On the night of 2 July 1470 it burned down while the bailiff was away at a banquet. It was never rebuilt.
- Belmont lies at 1420 metres in the forest between Fidaz and Bargis, already on the territory of the municipality of Flims, on a rock spire about 50 metres high. From the car park at the forest edge near Fidaz it's about 30 minutes; the final climb follows a steep path on the north side, its steps partly cut into the rock.
- The oldest parts of Belmont date from the 10th or 11th century. By the early 20th century hardly any masonry was still visible; excavations between 1932 and 1936 uncovered and secured the foundations.
- In clear weather, from Belmont you can see across to Crap Sogn Parcazi and into the Domleschg to the castles of Hochjuvalt and Ortenstein.
- The 3-Burgen-Tour hiking route links all three. Sure-footedness is needed; none of the ruins charges admission.
- The same website spells the castle both «Crap Sogn Parcazi» and «Crap Sogn Barcazi» — the same place is meant.

The Rhine Gorge on our doorstep

We owe Trin Mulin's terraced setting to a natural catastrophe. At the end of the Ice Age, the mountain above Flims collapsed, buried the Rhine and dammed it into a lake reaching beyond Tavanasa. The lake sought its own outlet — and in doing so carved the gorge we hike through today.
- About 7 cubic kilometres of limestone broke away — by the tourist office's reckoning, eight to nine Matterhorns' worth. An area of over 50 square kilometres was buried.
- The landslide area stretches from Flims Dorf via Trin Mulin and Trin Digg to Reichenau, and on the other side via Tarschlims and Muletg to Laax and Sagogn. It is the largest known landslide in Europe.
- On its debris lie the forest lakes Prau Pulte, Tuleritg, Cauma and Cresta. The Crestasee, where you swim, is a child of the same event.
- The gorge measures about 14 kilometres between Ilanz and Reichenau; the white limestone walls reach 350 metres at their highest points.
- At Trin Station the Punt Ruinaulta spans the Vorderrhein: 105 metres long, 1.8 metres wide, made of wood, designed by the Bonaduz engineer Walter Bieler. Over on the Bonaduz side lie a sandbank and a fire pit.
- The Ruinaulta is listed in the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national significance. Rangers have been active there since 2017.
- 35 species of orchid grow in the heather-pine forests; the best known is the lady's slipper, which flowers in May and June. 350 species of butterfly and moth also live here, most of them moths.
- Little ringed plovers and common sandpipers breed between April and July on the gravel banks and islands. The protected areas along the bank are closed off — please stay on the paths.
- A second, smaller landslide struck Fidaz on 10 April 1939: about 1.5 million cubic metres of rock from the Malm wall of the Flimserstein, destroying almost ten hectares of forest in two minutes. A mountain cemetery commemorates the disaster.

The guest card

Trin's guest card brings discounts at businesses in the area — from swimming pool entry to concerts. The tourist office keeps the current list of participating businesses; it changes from season to season.
- The most important rule: the card must be shown without being asked. Nothing is refunded afterwards.
- Excursions and nature: Crestasee, Viamala gorge, the treetop trail and the Alp Mora bus.
- Culture: the Casa Cultura Ringel in Trin, the Sperre Trin fortress museum, the Museum Laax, the Gelbe Haus in Flims, and access to Gate2science.
- Sport and wellness: Sportzentrum Flims, the bouldering hall, rafting offers, trail running, Pilates.
- Plus discounts at restaurants in the area and at individual shops.
- The card is valid for the summer season from May to October. The tourist office keeps a separate list for winter.
- You get the card from us at reception.

Ruinaulta-Ticket

A day ticket letting you travel through the Rhine Gorge as often as you like — by Rhaetian Railway and by postbus. With it you can plan a one-way hike and leave the return trip to the timetable.
- It's valid on the trains between Trin and Ilanz and on the postbuses between Tamins and Ilanz, as well as between Versam and Tenna. The Ruinaulta bus between Sagogn and Brün is included too.
- Tamins to Ilanz means: Flims and Falera lie on the same line and are included.
- It's bought at staffed Rhaetian Railway stations, through Railservice, or via PostAuto.
- A note on the train: Trin station does not lie in the village but down in the Ruinaulta — about 30 minutes on foot down from Trin Porclis. The station is unstaffed, with RhB parking next to it.
- From the site, the simpler start is at the Trin Mulin postbus stop: line 81 towards Chur, or towards Flims and Laax.
- A good reason to leave the car behind: a parking ban zone covers the whole village area of Trin, and every official car park charges a fee. Payment is by cash, TWINT, ParkingPay or EasyPay.
- Down in the gorge a hiking path runs from station to station — Ilanz, Castrisch, Valendas-Sagogn, Versam-Safien, Trin, Reichenau-Tamins. You ride out and walk back, or the other way round.

A convertible minibus crosses the gorge in summer: from Laax via Sagogn and Valendas to Versam, Bonaduz, Reichenau and Tamins. It connects the two sides of the valley, otherwise joined only by a long detour.
- Reservation is mandatory, at least an hour before departure. The bus has few seats.
- Reservations by phone at +41 81 288 43 52 or through PostAuto.
- It does not take bikes — neither inside nor outside. The Rhaetian Railway remains the option for shortcutting by bike.
- The bus is not wheelchair-accessible, and it does not accept groups of ten or more.
- It runs daily in high season, and only on weekends in late summer and autumn. The current timetable is on PostAuto.
- Tickets are available from the driver, at machines, at station counters and in the SBB app. With the Ruinaulta ticket, the Sagogn–Brün section is covered.
- From the site you reach it on postbus line 81 from Trin Mulin: towards Chur to Tamins, towards Laax to Laax.

Before you pack, take a look yourself: the tourist office has a camera right here in Trin Mulin and one on Bargis, and Flims Laax shows the Caumasee, the Rhine Gorge near Conn, the Flims valley station and the mountain up to the Vorab. That way you can see whether the valley lies in fog while the sun shines up top — it happens here more often than you'd think.
- Trin Mulin: the tourist office's camera stands in the village, a few steps from the site. The most honest view of our weather.
- Bargis: the tourist office's second camera and the mountain lodge's own show the high valley above Fidaz. The snow lies longer up there than in the village — and in summer you can see whether the climb is worth it.
- Caumasee, the Rhine Gorge near Conn, the Flims valley station, Crap Sogn Gion, Cassons and Vorab: all on the Flims Laax webcam page, from 760 to 2,810 metres. Anyone heading into the mountains in the morning checks the cloud line there.
- For road conditions, Switzerland has the phone number 163.
- The Oberalp Pass is closed in winter, the Lukmanier Pass is not — important if you're arriving from central Switzerland or Ticino.
- For those driving back towards Zurich: the tourist office advises not setting off on Saturday late morning or Sunday late afternoon.

Every year we celebrate on 1 August, the Swiss National Day. Guests are invited — there's nowhere to sign up and nothing to bring.
- 1 August is the Swiss National Day; expect shops and offices to be closed.
- The village celebrates too: the tourist office puts on a brunch at the Crestasee on 1 August. Reservations are requested for that.
- Around the holiday, a ban on fires and fireworks often applies in and near forests. The current forest fire risk is shown by the federal warning.
- If you want to grill yourself that day: the village's fire pits are freely accessible as long as no ban is in force.
- Ask at reception how we're marking it this year — that's decided at short notice and depends on the weather.

- Regardless, the pizza station is always there: you make your own pizza there whenever you like.

- If it doesn't happen, the next oven isn't far: the Ustria Parlatsch lies a few minutes away in Trin Mulin.
